Highway Trust Fund No TEA Yes

Highway Trust Fund (HTF): On July 31, the Highway Trust Fund’s authorization will expire. The fund has long been unsustainable, containing large diversions for mass transportation and other wasteful projects. Congress is currently considering a 6 month, $11 billion bailout for the fund. Heritage Action opposes any bailouts, and is instead pushing for real reform.

The Transportation Empowerment Act (TEA), introduced by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL06), would return control of highway decisions back to the states, eliminating wasteful diversions and ensuring that highway dollars fund highways. Sentinels should call their representatives urging them to support TEA and oppose any bailouts of the highway program.

The Heritage Foundation has an excellent backgrounder on the Highway Trust Fund that Sentinels can send to Congressional staffers if they are not familiar with the issue. Additionally, the Heritage Foundation’s Michael Sargent wrote a short article on some of the wasteful diversions currently afflicting the fund.
