Lifting the Ban on Crude Oil Exports

Lifting America’s Energy, Economic and National Security

Background:

The United States placed a ban on crude oil exports during the 1970’s, at a time of energy scarcity.  However, our nation is now experiencing an abundance of energy, specifically abundant stores of crude oil.  A bipartisan group of members of Congress is discussing legislation that would end the 40-year ban on American crude oil exports.  Lifting this ban could create jobs, generate revenue, decrease energy costs, help our allies and strengthen our position as a global energy leader by placing more oil on the global market.

It’s ironic that we would consider allowing Iran to export their oil (and generate billions of dollars for their economy), but we will deny our own companies and our own economy the same opportunity. (The Iron Irony, Breaking Energy)[i]

Lifting the ban on crude oil exports benefits America:

  • Good for jobs and the economy:
    • Generate 300,000 jobs and billions in revenue for critical services.
    • Expand U.S. exports and reduce our trade deficit by $22 billion.
    • Will not raise fuel costs, but rather will save American consumers up to an average $5.8 billion per year on gasoline, heating oil and diesel fuel.

  • Strengthens our national security:
    • Supports our NATO Allies – the U.S. is stronger and more secure when our allies are energy secure and economically vital
    • Strengthening our economy and position on the geopolitical stage, secures our nation.
