Priorities and Action Items Post Thanksgiving Week

Congress is out of session this week for Thanksgiving recess. When they return we expect the Senate to vote on their version of tax reform. Next month, Government funding is set to expire on December 8th. Now is the time to tell Congress they must fully offset any spending increases!

Sentinel Priorities:
1) Tax Reform: Tell lawmakers to support the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and make it even stronger by keeping the elimination of the individual mandate of Obamacare in the Senate bill. The mandate is a tax penalty on hard-working Americans who cannot afford rising Obamacare costs.
2) Reduce Spending: Tell lawmakers to establish one discretionary spending cap and fully offset any increase in federal spending.

November 20th: Sentinel Weekly Action Guide

Washington, D.C. Update:

Congress is out of session this week for Thanksgiving recess. Last week, House Republicans passed legislation reforming our tax code and cutting rates for individuals, families, and businesses. Titled the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (H.R.1), the bill passed on a mostly party-line vote (13 Republicans voted against the proposal). The Senate Finance Committee approved its tax reform plan along strict party lines after voting down class warfare amendments offered by Democrats. A Senate floor vote is expected after Thanksgiving. Also last week, Congress approved a fiscal year 2018 defense authorization “conference report” (or final bill that was negotiated by both chambers in a conference committee). President Trump will sign the nearly $700 billion measure (H.R. 2810) which includes $66 billion in Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) funding this week. The bill assumes more than the total defense spending caps permitted in a 2011 budget law (BCA caps) by at least $80 billion.

Core priorities for this week:

  1. Tax Reform: Tell lawmakers to support theTax Cuts and Jobs Act and make it even stronger by keeping the elimination of the individual mandate of Obamacare in the Senate bill. The mandate is a tax penalty on hard-working Americans who cannot afford rising Obamacare costs.
  2. Reduce Spending: Tell lawmakers to establish one discretionary spending cap and fully offset any increase in federal spending.
  3. Immigration: Tell lawmakers to support President Trump’s efforts to end DACA, eliminate the diversity visa program, and oppose bipartisan efforts to pass amnesty on a December omnibus spending package. Congress should secure our borders and reform legal immigration before making changes to DACA.
  4. Obamacare: Tell senators to oppose any straight bailout of Obamacare, including the Alexander-Murray proposal and support President Trump’s decision to end the illegal CSR payments to insurance companies and include the individual mandate repeal in tax reform.
