Asheville City Council Chooses to Divide, Not Unify Citizens. Reparations Resolution Filled With Historical Inaccuracies

On July 14, 2020, Asheville City Council voted unanimously to pass a repentant measure that formally apologizes to black residents and moves to issue reparations in the form of investments in certain areas of the community through the creation of the Community Reparations Commission.

This resolution contains inaccurate statements about the City of Asheville and its history. Asheville has long been an inclusive city and one that has demonstrated this in action.

Asheville has long had an Office of Equity and Inclusion and support minority, women and disabled-owned businesses.

The City of Asheville Policy on discrimination is as follows:

It is the City of Asheville’s policy to:

  • Provide minorities equal opportunity to participate in all aspects of city contracting and purchasing programs, including but not limited to, participation in procurement, professional and construction contracts; and
  • Prohibit discrimination against any person or business in pursuit of these opportunities on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, disability, familial status, or national origin, and to conduct its contracting and purchasing programs so as to prevent any discrimination and to resolve all claims of such discrimination.

Voting for this resolution admits that the City of Asheville has done nothing with regard to Equity and Inclusion and that is not true.

The City of Asheville’s practices and policies then are to blame for discrimination and inequality, not the citizens of Asheville.

Demonizing and punishing all citizens of all colors and all races for the past is dividing and reckless. Negating the positive changes that have been made is further fomenting anger and division and pushes people further apart. The City of Asheville does not acknowledge any positive changes.  This is dangerous and irresponsible. There is nothing in this resolution that brings people together.  No one can change the past.  What we can do is move forward.   The Council plays into the hands of the Marxists who are fomenting the destruction of public and private property and civil unrest.  Shameful!
