Request GOP Action on Poison Pill

September 27, 2015

Dear Buncombe, Haywood, and Henderson, Polk, and Transylvania County GOP Chairs:

On Thursday, September 24, 2015, the NC House and Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass H373.  Before the vote and at the ‘11th hour,’ Representative David Lewis introduced language into H373 that establishes shadow parties in direct competition with the Republican and Democratic Parties, that is over retaliation to the newly-elected GOP leadership. The statute § 163-278.8B in H373 (Link is an outrageous addition to the bill that will serve to make political parties irrelevant, make caucus bosses reigning supreme, and place an elite class ruling to run rough shod over the people.  This statute is not only in violation of the NCGOP Plan of Organization, but it is not why our Founders shed their blood, swore their sacred honor, and gave up their treasure.

It is in the best interest of the Republican Party and in the interest of preserving our Republic that you urge Governor McCrory to veto H373.  It would also do the Party good to see leadership stand up to censure those in your ranks who sponsored the bill by voting themselves permanent seats, undermining our political parties, and silencing the vote of our fellow citizens. (Craven GOP Calls for Removal of Committman David Lewis) For once, hold our elected officials accountable, something that we have not seen from GOP leaders. Senate votes here.  House votes here. Moreover, both NC SpeakerTim Moore and Senate Pro Temp President Phil Berger need to get the message that they either keep the bill vetoed or strike § 163-278.8B from H373 before a vote.

Please do not remain silent.  It will be perceived as being compliant with the corruption of the very fabric of ‘Government Of the people, By the People, and For The People.’  These PACS will be able to insert themselves into primary contests using the state party brands. The caucus leadership will have authority to accept unlimited party PAC money previously directed through state parties.  Caucus leadership will have free reign to spend this PAC money how they see fit without party rule constraints.  Silence is action.

Be assured, the grassroots of your party are totally disgusted with the GOP leadership.  Look no further than the ouster of John Boehner.  Grassroots activism did that. We’re just getting warmed up.  If there ever was a time for the Republican Party to stand on principle, this is it.  If you do not, it is just another nail in the coffin of the GOP, the dying minority party.  This will become a campaign issue for each and every incumbent in office in your counties.  The Republican Party will continue to hemorrhage members because they continue to stand for nothing.   The Republican Party waited over 130 years to wrestle power from the Democrats, and this is how it is being wasted.

Not only do we strongly support Craven County GOP Resolution to remove Representative David Lewis from National Committee Chairmanship for failure to comply with NCGOP Plan of Organization, but we urge you to stand up and publicly hold accountable the following senators and representatives in your districts who voted to make state political parties irrelevant and to undermine the votes of every North Carolinian. This is nothing more than incumbents looking to retaliate against newly elected grassroots Conservative leadership.  These individuals only wish to protect their power and influence. Shameful.

Senator Tom Apodaca (District 49, Henderson, Buncombe, Transylvania)

Representative Chuck McGrady, sponsor of H373 (R- House 117 Henderson)
